People waiting for a lung transplant face a big problem-- the vast majority of donor lungs are too damaged to be used. The new technology, called XVIVO (for ex-vivo, meaning outside the body), allows doctors to treat and recondition donor lungs that would otherwise be unsuitable for transplant, and may make the donor waiting list a thing of the past.
